If you are creating a public website with SharePoint online and you want to start marketing that website to customers, you will want to get google and bing to start crawling your site.

To achieve this, you will need do some manipulation of the website with SharePoint Designer, as the web based configuration console will not allow you to either drop a verification file in the correct place, or make any changes to the meta data required for you to register your site with either google or bing’s webmaster tools.

Here are a few simple steps to help you achieve the goal:

  1. Download the html verification file from google or bing
  2. Open your public website with SharePoint Designer
  3. Click on the ‘All Files’ icon in the left pane, under the ‘Site Objects’ pane.
  4. You should be able to drag the google or bing html file straight into the right hand pane, and it will immediately upload this to the server
  5. Once you have done that, you should be able to go back to the google or bing webmaster tools and hit verify.

All done.  You should now have your site registered with either google or bing.
